What time is it?
Today’s post comes from The Tip, Inside México’s free weekly email newsletter:
Sunday, March 11, Daylight Savings (US and Canada)
Whoah!!! In March? Just when you thought you knew what time it was in the United States and Canada, you’ve got to adjust again. For nearly four weeks, most of Mexico will be two hours behind the east coast of the United States, while Mexico will “spring forward” on the traditional date, the first Sunday in April.
Why the change? More daylight equals less electricity. Less electricity means lower consumption of oil and coal. Some say DST saves the US 1% a day on energy costs; add an extra 28 days of DST and you’re talking about a considerable savings. In 2005, following this rational, President Bush signed The Energy Policy Act and the DST change into law. This isn’t a new scheme. Benjamin Franklin proposed the idea in 1784 in an article entitled “The Economical Project of Diminishing the Cost of Light.”
